Review for new chamber opera, ‘The Snow Child’

Published 08 Feb 2016 in The Cambridge Student

“Owain Park’s score for Angela Carter’s The Snow Child immediately takes us to an altogether different barrenness. The cold sound world is infused with a fantastical sensibility, aided by the extensive use of tuned percussion. The opera is bookended by highly characterised and successful chorus sextet material. The more abstract setting and staging of this opera worked well in conjunction with its clear musical structure, though perhaps the setting would be helped by a slightly greater length. The voices are extremely well matched to their parts and the performance was noticeably mature, both dramatically and musically.

“This was a special performance and a remarkable undertaking.”
